MIGUEL MEDINA
Miguel's passion for art stems from his childhood. At age 11, he devotes himself to drums and accompanies rock bands. At the age of 16, along with studies in classical percussion and composition at the Conservatory of Music Manuel M. Ponce in Mexico, he is a substitute for the symphony orchestra of Aguascalientes, and plays, records and tours with numerous music groups.
In 2000, Miguel moves to France and meets the choreographer and director Ruben Segal (Spain, Argentina). Together they develop a rhythm workshop aimed at theater and dance companies, offered in several European cities, in Mexico and in Canada. During a visit to Montreal, he meets Michael Montanaro, director of the Concordia University dance department, who offers him a job as an accompanist for contemporary dance classes, a position he still holds today.
Since then, Miguel continues his career in Montreal with, among others, El Nitrogen, Juan Carranza, Gypsy Blues Sarah Rénélik, Malade Mantra, Ballet Flamenco Arte de Espana, SASASA and Jorge Martinez. With the latter, Miguel had the opportunity to open for Cesaria Evora in 2008 and Paco de Lucia in 2011.
Outside of music, Miguel is interested in cinema. Since 2004, he directed several short films including Les Autres, which was presented during the festival MICA in Bosnia, 2005. He worked as an editor for the film Masturbation libre, by the eccentric François Gourd, presented in 2006 at the Festival of New Cinema, and in 2007 at the Rendez-vous du Cinéma Québécois.
Recently he was named endorser of the new series of All Wood Kéjam (manufacturer of percussion instruments in Quebec).
